Farnham Angling Society raises £4,000 for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice

Farnham Angling Society raises £4,000 for the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice This year will result in The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham receiving in excess of £4,000 following this years 24-Hour Jack Frost Memorial Charity Pairs Match which takes place on Badshot Lea Big Pond near Farnham,
Surrey.

This is the 9th year that we have run the match to commemorate the late Mr Jack Frost, our previous Secretary who gave 40-years of service to the Society and who was an active charity worker. The first match started off as a singles match that took place on The Old Pin, but has now progressed today to a competition that usually takes the entire lake, with the trophy competed for by at least 10-pairs of anglers, although this year’s match saw 14-pairs competing. Thanks to Alan Loten the Head Bailiff on the water for sorting out which swims to use and giving all those competing a good amount of water to target.

Many thanks to all of the anglers that took part and congratulations to all as we have helped raise over £4,000 in sponsorship this year, which bring the total funds raised since the matches began 9-years ago to a figure in excess of £24,000. The monies go to support both the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham and the Second Chance Children’s Charity in Portsmouth.

The match started at midday on Saturday 23rd May and with the hottest weekend of the year prompting the lakes carp to start spawning, many competitors’ catches were lower than in previous years, but all members kept going through the night in pursuit of the chance of finding the shoals of Bream and catching those elusive specimen fish.

Steve Ball who caught the lakes biggest known Carp from the side of The New Pin, a Common of 36lb 11oz, to achieve his personal best

Top marks for perseverance go to: Steve Ball who caught the lakes biggest known Carp from the side of The New Pin, a Common of 36lb 11oz, to achieve his personal best, to which he added a 7lb 8oz Tench for good measure; Trevor & Jamie Hopkins who quiver tipped through the night on The Hump for Bream to 8lb 8oz, Tench & Roach/Bream hybrids and lost 3 Pike in the morning to finish fourth overall; Ben Streek & Ryan Reid who worked tirelessly in Simpsons to finish third overall; ‘Burt’ Kinge had a decent Catfish of 26lb 8oz from the right hand side of the New Pin.

At 1pm on Sunday 24th with everyone having packed up and made their way back to the car park, and with all of the score sheets and sponsorship having been tallied up, the results were read to the waiting teams. With over £4K having been raised in sponsorship, the event was a resounding success yet again. As the fundraising is the single most important aspect of the match, Andy Moore and Glen Robinson as the two anglers raising the most sponsorship with a fantastic £550 and £505 respectively, won the major individual prizes of £100 and £50 of gift vouchers. After all the effort that both members made in raising funds and having both subsequently blanked, their
prizes went some way to making up for this. No one said that is was going to be fair ! ! !

Duncan & Kevin Charman were the winners, the brothers having caught well at the start and the following morning to catch 190lb 9oz of Bream and Tench off the right hand side of The Old Pin. They had been pressed hard all the way by Ben Streek and Ryan Reid who came second by landing 141lb 6oz of Bream, Carp and Tench from Simpsons whilst Dave & Sharon Benton finished third with 100lb or Bream, Carp and a surprise Pike from Dead Mans Bay.

The winners of the match received complementary Farnham Angling Society permits for the 2010/2011 season and FAS T-shirts and baseball caps. The second and third placed teams won £50 of fishing tackle gift vouchers and supplies of Dynamite tinned hemp and Dynamite pellets respectively.

Due to the generosity of many tackle shops and bait suppliers that support the event, there were fishing tackle prizes for not only the two members raising most sponsorship, but all anglers finishing in the top three teams and also to those landing the best specimens and most species. Farnham Angling Society would like to express sincere thanks to all of those that contributed to the prizes, with special thanks to Rob at Hampshire Tackle, but also to Roy & Phil at Guildford Angling Centre, Alan & Andrew at Backhurst Bait Supplies, John & Dennis at Gold Valley Tackle, Mick & Fran at The Creel, Peter & Peter at Goldsworth Angling, Martin at Westfield Angling & Duncan Charman for their generosity in donating the gift vouchers and fishing tackle prizes for the event.

A big thank you once again to all those that took part from both Farnham Angling Society and The Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice. I hope to see you again next year.

Next year, I hope that we can get a full complement of 17 pairs for the event to celebrate the match’s 10th Anniversary, if you would like to take part, then please call me once the date has been advertised in the Post AGM Informative in February 2010. Remember that the match is a fundraising event, not an ultra competitive match in the true sense of the word, and next years event will once again be all about raising funds for The Second Chance Children’s Charity.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Ian Gray – Honorary Secretary
